About HANC
HOUND ASSOCIATION OF NORTHERN CALIFORNIA
HANC, founded in 1998, was reborn in the summer of 2022. On August 15, 2023 HANCs Interim President, Ed Odron, received a letter from the AKC Event Operations department that our by-law revisions had been accepted & we had advanced to accredited status! Due to the depth of experience shown by our members, HANC has been fast-tracked to holding a mentored event [i.e: Hound Show] in 2024!

About Hounds
Most hounds share the common ancestral trait of being used for hunting. Some use acute scenting powers to follow a trail. Others demonstrate a phenomenal gift of stamina as they relentlessly run down quarry. Beyond this, however, generalizations about hounds are hard to come by, since the Group encompasses quite a diverse lot. There are Pharaoh Hounds, Norwegian Elkhounds, Afghans and Beagles, among others. The Hound Group is commonly divided into scenthounds, who track their quarry via scent [beagles, basset hounds, bloodhounds, the coonhounds, etc] & sighthounds, who follow their prey at great speed using their sight to chase & catch it [greyhounds, whippets, afghans, salukis, ibizan hounds, cirnecos, etc.], but there are many hounds that defy this simple classicfication, utizing both their noses & eyes to hunt & hold their quarry at bay, such as basenjis, Norwegian elkhounds, Rhodesian Ridgebacks, etc. Some of the hounds were bred to work together in packs & some hunt alone. Hound breeds range from the ubiquitous Snoopylike beagle to the rare and exotic Azawakh. All hound breeds make lovely pets for families that understand what they were bred to do.

There are currently two hound breeds in the AKC Miscellaneous Group, waiting in the wings for their approval, Portuguese Podengos & Peruvian Inca Orchids. There are quite a few FSS Hound Breeds listed with the AKC, and many of these rare breeds will 'move up' to regular AKC approved status in the future.
